It’s a fact. Americans, on average, are growing taller and heavier. If you’re a larger person, there are a few things to keep in mind about the quality of your sleep, the kind of mattress you need to support you, and the kind of bed necessary. Sleep apnea affects a lot of people in the United States, and if you’re susceptible to it, being heavier can make it worse. The likelihood of having a restless night can also increase with your weight. This can be due to sleeping on the wrong mattress. When it comes to choosing a new bed, there are several things you can do to improve the quality of your sleep. In this article, we will briefly review some tips and considerations.

Are you past the weight limit of your bed?

Most of the mattresses and beds available today are designed to support people who weigh less than 240 pounds. Even mattresses that are meant for two people are meant for people who are less than 240 pounds on each side. For many heavy people, and I include myself in this category, that’s pushing the weight limit. Mind you; I don’t think this takes into account being active or even much tossing and turning when we’re in bed. Perhaps one day, mattresses and beds will come with easy-to-understand ratings that we can easily and readily see for ourselves when mattress shopping. Until then, please don’t be distracted while searching for your new bed and mattress. Seek out a reputable retailer you can count on. We’ll have some suggestions for you later in this article.

How lack of sleep can make you gain weight

Poor quality sleep is not just about getting rest. Not getting enough sleep can affect your body in several ways.

1.         Snacking to stay awake – Many people who feel tired during the day from lack of sleep reach for a quick snack to stay alert. This can happen several times a day, and it’s easy to ignore because dosing off when you’re not supposed to can be risky.

2.         Ghrelin and leptins are double trouble – And you thought poor sleep just meant big bags under your eyes. Turns out poor sleep can add saddlebags to our waist. Ghrelin and leptin are two hormones that help regulate eating. Ghrelin tells your body it’s time to eat. Lack of sleep can increase your levels of Ghrelin. Leptin tells your body it’s time to stop eating. Not enough sleep decreases your leptin levels. (I bet my leptin levels are stuck at zero!)

3.         Insulin resistance – Poor sleep can stress your blood sugar levels and mess with your circadian rhythms. As if this isn’t bad enough on its own, less time asleep means more opportunities to eat.

A single night of sleep can mess up your metabolism.

Sleep debt is like bad credit card debt. Missing one night of sleep is like missing one payment on a high-interest credit card. Once it starts, it’s very, very difficult to catch up. Many people think falling asleep in front of the tv helps when you don’t get enough sleep. It doesn’t work that way. Neither does trying to catch up on the weekends. The more we learn about sleep, the more we find out how crucial it is to stay healthy.

Bad mood from bad sleep

It’s not just about feeling less energy during the day. Research shows poor sleep at night, and sleep deprivation significantly affects our emotional well-being. Most of us have enough little challenges to deal with that being able to start the day in a good mood is a big help. Nobody wants to wear cranky pants, especially if the pants are feeling a little tighter around the waistline since the pandemic.

Why The Family Bed from Taylor & Wells is a great option

From the very beginning, The Family Bed from Taylor & Wells was designed to be comfortable and supportive for people who want and need more room. At 120 inches (that’s ten feet) wide and 80 long, The Family Bed is larger than any commercially available bed. And if you want even bigger: The Family Bed XL is 144 inches (that’s twelve feet) wide and 84 inches long!

Made in the USA

All of The Family Beds from Taylor & Wells are made in our factory right here in Forth Worth, Texas. This means excellent customer service, free shipping, and the peace of mind knowing your mattress is made with the finest of materials by people who could be your neighbors.

And since we make our own beds, we also offer the finest in pillows, bed linens, and mattress toppers that are guaranteed to fit.

Temperature regulation for those who sleep hot

Whether you want a firmer mattress with individually pocketed coils or something supportive but softer, The Taylor & Wells Family Bed gel-infused technology helps keep you cooler at night. It’s the same for those who prefer memory foam or latex mattresses; all Family Beds are designed to provide temperature regulation.

Supporting heavier weight is built-in.

When you make a bed as big as The Family Bed, it’s important to pay specific attention to placing extra support where it’s needed. This was one of the most important priorities for Taylor & Wells when designing this bed. Special attention is paid to edge support for this bed regardless of the firmness level you choose.

Adjustable beds require adjustable mattresses.

Don’t make the common mistake made by people who want to be able to choose their sleeping position with an adjustable bed frame. It’s understandable. Finding a mattress specially made for adjustable bed frames is not easy. Many manufacturers don’t bother to specify whether your mattress is appropriate for an adjustable frame. It can be a guessing game, especially when you shop online. The experts at Bedding Mart can answer this question and anything else you want to know about support mattresses suitable for adjustable frames.
