It's not like it used to be, and that's great news when it comes to beds. So much has changed with the technology, the materials, and the construction of mattresses; you have an extraordinary number of choices today. The trouble is that making sure you get the right big bed can be a little complicated and intimidating. There's so much more to know today; it's important to find a reliable place to buy your new mattress.

What to look for when choosing where to buy your mattress

It used to be just a handful of mattress brands. Today, we have literally dozens of new brands, and every brand has multiple different designs available. And then, there are different sizes, and different firmness levels, and mattresses that are adjustable, and mattresses that aren't.

To help, we've put together some guidelines and tips you can use to make the best choice.

1.         Made in the USA.

These four words mean more now than ever. It's probably one of the most important things to look for when buying a new mattress. Made in the USA means your mattress isn't made in a sweatshop somewhere overseas. It means only tested and approved, and certified materials are used to make your mattress. It means all manufacturing laws are being followed. It means if you ever have a problem, the manufacturer will be easy to find and get a hold of. And, last but not least, it means good-paying jobs for people like your neighbors.

2.         Online is good.

Even though there are dozens and dozens of new brands to choose from, there must be 1000 times as many places to buy your new mattress. There are plenty of fine websites you can visit. Look for ones that offer product details that you can pore over. And be sure to review the kind of warranty they offer. Of course, it's even better if you can find a local mattress outlet you can visit.

3.         Local is best.

If you haven't yet tried one of today's new mattresses, you don't know what you're missing. Seriously, the variety of comfort levels and firmness levels, cooling gels, and hybrids are so expansive, trying them out is half the fun. Experience the mattress feel first. You can always go back to your tried and true, but you owe it to yourself to actually see, touch, and lie down in one of the many new mattresses available. We can't promise you Disney when you're shopping for a big bed, but we're sure you'll still have plenty of fun.

4.         Trust an expert.

We encourage you to learn everything you can about the new choices available to you. Thankfully the easiest way to learn is to talk to an expert at your local mattress outlet. A mattress expert will answer your questions and explain all of the advantages built into the new products. Be sure to look for a retailer who is well known and well respected in the community. Look over their reviews online and check to see how long they've been in business.

5.         Do they make their own beds?

Does the retail outlet you're visiting manufacture their own beds? It's not a mandatory, but it does come with some advantages. First and foremost, their staff will know everything there is to know about their beds. And because they make what they sell, you can be sure you'll get the best price. Also, there's no question they can stand behind their mattresses.

6.         Be careful with custom beds.

At some point, you may be tempted to choose a custom-made mattress when you're looking for a big bed. If so, be prepared to pay more – a lot more. A comparable mattress available from your local retail outlet will be only a fraction of what you will pay for a custom mattress. In addition, not all who claim to make custom mattresses have the experience and expertise they may claim to. Please do your research. The other downside to a custom mattress is time. Many people end up waiting months for a new custom mattress.

7.         Go big or go Family Bed?

There are big beds, and there are really big beds. And then, there is The Family Bed.

In the past, the biggest bed you could get was a California King or a Wyoming King or a Texas King, or an Alaskan King. Then along came The Family Bed by Taylor & King. It's the biggest bed by far, and you can buy it commercially. That means you can get one right away and at a very reasonable price. The Family Bed is 10 feet (120 inches) wide. The Family Bed XL is an unbelievable 12 feet (144 inches) wide. The Alaskan King comes in at only 108 inches wide. That's 3 feet (36 inches) less than The Family Bed XL.

The really big difference with The Family Bed

Size is important, but it's not the only thing that makes The Family Bed so popular. Find out more here.

Why bigger is better.

Anything you can do to improve the quality of your sleep is priceless in the long run, especially when you get a little older. High-quality sleep benefits just about every part of your life. An oversize bed gives you the room to find your favorite sleeping position, and that means less tossing and turning. Feeling comfortable with gel-infused memory foam and feeling supported with a hybrid mattress will help you sleep better.

Buying a memory foam mattress is different today.

When traditional memory foam first came on the market, some people liked it, and some didn't. Heat retention with memory foam beds became a concern. And depending on where you live, body heat can build up when you sleep. Today's memory foam layers help keep you keep with special gels. It's the same pressure relief and how a comfort layer can prevent pressure points. The density of the foam has a lot to do with it. New memory foam mattresses use high-density foam layers in just the right areas.
